NIH'ers Awarded for CFC Work

Four NIH employees captured awards in the annual communications contest sponsored by the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area. Drs. Melissa Racioppo and Cece McNamara of NIDA received a first place award for the Best Campaign Event, adapting an approach to treating drug abuse to motivate their coworkers to participate in the CFC. They stocked a fishbowl with gift certificates to local restaurants and stores and let contributors fish for a prize. CSR Communications Director Don Luckett placed first for Best Feature Article Featuring an Employee for his Nov. 26, 2002 NIH Record article on NINDS CFC keyworker Donald Thompson. NIH photographer John Crawford won second place for Best Photographic Coverage with his CFC kick-off photos published in the Oct. 15, 2002 NIH Record. Winners are (from l) Luckett, Racioppo, McNamara and Crawford.

Gottesman Wins Mentoring Award

The Association for Women in Science, Bethesda chapter, recently presented one of its annual Awards for Excellence in Mentoring to NCI's Dr. Susan Gottesman. The awards are in recognition and appreciation of outstanding mentoring of young scientists. Gottesman is chief of the biochemical genetics section in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology. She has acted as a mentor for both postdoctoral fellows and predoctoral trainees for the past 26 years. She has also hosted a series of high school, college and medical school students in her lab. Many of her trainees have remained in science and are now running their own laboratories.
