Dr. Elliott Schiffman, an NIH intramural biochemist who made major discoveries in cancer immunotherapy, died at his home in Chevy Chase, Md., on Dec. 31. He was 95.

Former NIH intramural investigator Dr. Ronald Dubner died on Jan. 22 in Rockville, Md. He was 88 years old.

Leadership at the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR) has changed hands: Dr. Maureen M. Goodenow moved from her positions as NIH associate director for AIDS research and OAR director to a new role as senior advisor in the NIH Office of the Director.

Dr. Edmund Tramont, associate director for special projects in NIAID’s Division of Clinical Research, died Mar. 5, after a brief illness. He was 83 years old.

Dr. Abner Notkins, a renowned expert on viral immunology and one of the architects of the modern NIH Intramural Research Program, died of complications from Covid-19 on Mar. 10 at age 90.

After almost 43 years of dedicated service with NIH, Michael Alexander retired from his post as hospitality service coordinator for the Clinical Center’s Office of Hospitality and Volunteer Services.

NIGMS Deputy Executive Officer Vickie Southers retired this past December after 22 years of federal service. Southers began her federal career at the U.S. General Accounting Office and then the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Dr. Enrico Cabib, retired NIH principal investigator and valued colleague and friend, died Feb. 24. His scientific mind and sense of humor enriched NIH since 1967, when he joined NIDDK as a principal investigator.

Margaritha Barbara Cole—who was the welcoming face of the R&W gift shop on the B1 level of Bldg. 31 for 27 years—died in 2020 at age 84. Plans for a memorial service had been put on hold due to the pandemic.

Dr. Partap Khalsa, director of NCCIH’s Division of Extramural Activities (DEA), retired Dec. 31 after 16 years at NIH.
