Former NIDDK Clinical Director Balow Retires After 50 Years at NIH

After 31 years as clinical director in the NIDDK Division of Intramural Research and 50 years total at NIH, Dr. James “Jim” Balow has retired. Balow stepped down as NIDDK’s clinical director in 2020 and has since remained in his position as acting chief and senior investigator in NIDDK’s Kidney Diseases Branch.

DPCPSI’s Anderson Retires

Dr. James M. Anderson, NIH deputy director for program coordination, planning and strategic initiatives (DPCPSI), retired June 30, after nearly 12 years of service.

Holy Cross Names Science Complex for Fauci

The College of the Holy Cross, founded in 1843 in Worcester, Mass., named a campus facility after NIAID director Dr. Anthony Fauci, who graduated from the school in 1962. A dedication ceremony was held on June 11.

Bernard Receives 2022 Hartford Foundation Award

NIH chief officer for scientific workforce diversity Dr. Marie A. Bernard was awarded the John A. Hartford Foundation Trustees Award for her many years of dedication to improving the lives of older adults through research, education and clinical practice improvement.

NIDCD Clinical Director Van Waes Retires

Dr. Carter Van Waes, clinical director and chief of the Head and Neck Surgery Branch and tumor biology section at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, will retire on June 30.

Medical Arts Produces Award-Winning Designs

Several designers in ORS’s Medical Arts recently were honored by Graphic Design USA. Winning pieces included posters, flyers, visual branding and murals for several NIH institutes, centers and offices.
