Dr. Carsten Bönnemann, chief of the neuromuscular and neurogenetic disorders of childhood section (NNDCS) in NINDS’s Intramural Neurogenetics Branch, recently received the first-ever Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Legacy Award for Achievement in Clinical Research.

Many consider NIH to be like a family, but for Melinda Nelson, it was even more true. Retiring from NIAMS after 45 years at NIH, she is part of three generations in her family to forge a career here.

Capt. Mary C. Fraser, former clinical research nurse and commissioned officer in the Public Health Service in NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), died Mar. 5, after a long illness.

Former NIH director Dr. Francis Collins and Dr. Anthony Fauci received the 2022 Elliot L. Richardson Prize for Excellence in Public Service.

FNIH appointed Dr. Julie Louise Gerberding as its next chief executive officer. She will assume her role on May 16.

Dr. Thomas Vollberg, director of NIMHD’s Office of Extramural Research Administration (OERA), has retired after 28 years of meritorious service to NIH.

NIH mourns the passing of Dr. Paul Farmer, global health leader, physician, medical anthropologist, Harvard professor, author and longtime friend of NIH. He died in Rwanda on Feb. 21.

Dr. Abby Ershow, senior nutrition scientist in the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), retired in December after 39 years at NIH. She led the ODS iodine initiative from 2014 to 2021 to strengthen research on and develop data resources for studies of iodine nutrition.

After 60 years total of government service–22 of those at NIH—NIH Police Chief Alvin Hinton has retired. He previously served in the United States Park Police (USPP) for 31 years and 7 months.
