The Societa Oftalmologica Italiana (SOI) recently recognized National Eye Institute director Dr. Paul Sieving with the SOI Honorary Award in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Laurence P. Clarke, chief of the Image Technology Development Branch in NCI’s Cancer Imaging Program, died Apr. 16 in Florida from acute myeloid leukemia. He was a leader in medical imaging technology and championed bringing quantitative imaging into clinical trials.
Dr. Robert Nussenblatt, chief of the Laboratory of Immunology at the National Eye Institute, died of cancer on Apr. 17 at age 67. He came to NIH in 1977 and proved to be a tireless scientist, research leader, mentor, clinician and patient advocate.
Dr. Judah Leon “Lee” Rosner, a senior investigator in the molecular genetics section of NIDDK’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology, concluded a 50-year NIH career on Apr. 29 with an afternoon-long scientific seminar in Wilson Hall.
Dr. Herbert Needleman, a physician-scientist who published groundbreaking research on lead toxicity in children, died July 18. The Philadelphia native was 89 years old and died of Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Regina Smith James has joined NIMHD as a medical officer. She will serve as director of clinical and health services research in the Division of Scientific Programs.
Dr. Amjad Shehadah, a vascular neurology fellow in the Stroke Branch of the NINDS Division of Intramural Research, has received the Mordecai Y. T. Globus New Investigator Award in Stroke from the American Stroke Association (ASA).
Dr. Marian Willinger, who was instrumental in the launch of the Back to Sleep awareness campaign in 1994, retired on May 31 from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
