Trading Lab Life for Careers in Science Writing, Policy

The NIAMS Intramural Research Program Career Development and Outreach Branch recently hosted a forum on career paths to science policy and science writing. Intramural trainees heard from the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Office of International and Security Affairs deputy director Dr. Mahlet Mesfin, American Geophysical Union public information specialist/writer Lauren Lipuma and NIAMS science policy analyst Dr. Stephanie Burrows about hanging up their lab coats to pursue careers in science policy, diplomacy and communications. In addition to introducing skills and competencies needed for a successful transition, the presenters discussed ways to find and secure policy and writing jobs and the importance of networking with leaders in the field. Following featured talks, participants had the opportunity to engage directly with speakers.
