Astronauts Visit Lab, Patients at Clinical Center

NASA astronaut Dr. Michael Barratt, a member of Expedition 71, visited the NIH Clinical Center’s Rehabilitation Medicine Department. 

While visiting the Neurorehabilitation and Biomechanics (NAB) Research Lab, he tested an exoskeleton intended for assistance and exercise applications. The exoskeleton was originally designed for children with cerebral palsy by NAB researchers. 

Local Musicians Entertain in the CC Atrium 

Two recent concerts in the Music in the Atrium series at the Clinical Center brought joy to NIH staff, patients and visitors.

On Feb. 21, three internationally acclaimed young pianists dazzled those in attendance with their skillful, emotive performance. Held in conjunction with the European Academy of Music and Art, the concert featured Daya Wampler (12), Sarina Li (12) and Victoria Zhong (15), who played classical selections, including works by Chopin, Schumann and Liszt.

NIH’ers Celebrate Wear Red Day, Heart Health Month

On Feb. 7, NIH’ers across multiple institutes wore red in honor of National Wear Red Day. Some showed their spirit in their virtual meetings; others shared their heart-healthy pledges in person.

Research shows that having social support makes getting regular physical activity, eating healthy, losing weight and managing stress easier. Remember: even small changes can make a big difference.

Gingerbread Houses Bring Camaraderie, Cheer to the CC

It’s the sweetest time of the year, when creating gingerbread houses fosters team spirit across NIH and the colorful houses bring smiles to staff, patients and visitors of all ages who view them in the Clinical Center’s atrium.

It’s collegial until it’s competitive. This year, more than 60 teams decorated and submitted a confectionary creation for the annual contest.

NEI 5K Shows Spirit, Features Halloween Fun

More than 500 people turned out on Oct. 30 for the fifth annual National Eye Institute 5K Walk/Run/Roll. In addition to racing around the NIH Bethesda campus perimeter, participants competed in costume and carved pumpkin contests.

NIH’s Newest Club Brings Pickleball to Campus

Have you ever wanted to play the fastest growing sport in the United States? Well, now’s your chance.

A new pickleball club has begun playing at a converted tennis court near Bldg. 60. Sponsored by the Recreation and Welfare Association (R&W), the club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 - 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. for open social play.

Full NSO Returns to Enlighten Staff at the Clinical Center

The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) entertained NIH staff and patients with an array of classical pieces during its 12th annual NSO-NIH Sound Health concert on Sept. 4 in the NIH Clinical Center (CC) atrium. 

The full, 60-piece orchestra performed music that spanned several centuries and continents, including works by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Antonio Vivaldi, Aaron Copland and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and contemporary composers Takashi Yoshimatsu and Carlos Simon.
